Plant Biologist

Céréla, St-Hugues, Quebec

Cerela, a private plant breeding research center, is looking for a plant biologist to accelerate the development of the laboratory. This is a full time permanent position.

Context of the position:

Céréla recently set up a microbiology and molecular biology laboratory to support its agronomic plant breeding programs. In order to make the results of the laboratory profitable, we wish to hire a plant biology enthusiast who will be able to manage the laboratory's daily activities; propose and implement new methods; analyze sequence and genetic diversity data; and actively participate in field data collection during the summer. Since this new position will be central within the selection programs, the candidate will have to effectively communicate the results to all members of the multidisciplinary team, and maintain high ethical standards.

About us:

Céréla is a private research centre. We develop wheat, barley, oats, soybeans and industrial hemp cultivars adapted to the Eastern Canada climate and we manage agronomic trials at many sites in Quebec. Our dynamic team includes agricultural technicians, workers, and biology researchers. We are focused on innovation; we develop partnerships with university teams and are an active member of the seed industry in Canada.

Qualifications

  • University degree in plant biology, agronomy, or related
  • Demonstrated experience with molecular biology instruments and techniques, and with manipulations under sterile conditions
  • Passionate about plant biology
  • Autonomous, and self-taught, know how to put protocols in place according to scientific publications
  • Ability to network within a multidisciplinary team, through positive communication
  • Experienced with sequence analysis software
  • Familiar with statistical analysis, analysis of variance, GBS
  • Able to critically assess and understand the whole suite of operations
  • Demonstrate great attention to detail
  • Honesty, integrity and professionalism
  • Love working outdoor in the summer
  • Hold a valid driver's license, since the workplace is far from major cities
  • Language: English and French (conversation level)
Responsibilities
  • Perform genotyping and molecular biology experiments, such as sample collection, DNA extraction, amplification; immunological tests (ELISA)
  • Conduct laboratory microbiology experiments, such as culture and identification of fungal pathogens (Sclerotinia spp., Fusarium spp.)
  • Responsible for instrument maintenance and laboratory management
  • Actively participate in the analysis of sequence data (e.g. HTS or NGS) to perform GBS (genotype-by-sequencing) and genomic selection
  • Perform multisite and multi-year quantitative agronomical data analysis to identify successful lines
  • Maintain good relations with industry partners, academies and regulatory bodies
  • Adopt and promote safe work practices
The workplace is at Cereal, St-Hugues, Canada. Work schedule is typically of 37,5 h per week, from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, but may be flexible, and may require some overtime is peak periods. Salary to be discussed.
