Job Summary

The Research Technician will coordinate and contribute to research efforts on cannabis genetics and genomics projects. They will provide expertise in economic botany, genomics, bioinformatics, and population genetics to the ongoing research efforts in the laboratory. The individual will be joining a dedicated and highly motivated team of geneticists, molecular biologists, and evolutionary biologists. The work and environment are interdisciplinary, with the research focused on plant diversity and adaptation, comparative genomics and population genetics, domestication, and genomics-enabled crop improvement

Work Performed

-Designs, plans, and conducts population genetics analyses on large-scale genomics datasets, with a focus on understanding cannabis domestication history and biogeography

- Maintains and develops connections with collaborators in the cannabis research community, the cannabis industry, and with cannabis growers and breeders

- Manages and oversees efforts to generate , annotate, and curate high-quality genome assemblies.

- Develops and maintains second- and third generation sequencing datasets associated with different research projects

- Curates and maintains herbarium sample collections

- Develops novel bioinformatic pipelines and approaches to achieve research goals

- Analyzes experiment results and troubleshoots complex problems, especially those dealing with bioinformatics and population genomics experimental design

- Compiles data and writes reports, presents results, and participates in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and grant proposals

- Assists in training and onboarding of lab personnel

The Controlled Environment Systems Research Facility is looking for a research assistant with knowledge of strawberry production and/or Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA). The technician will assist in a research project that will investigate and optimize strawberry production, both in the greenhouse and under full indoor production scenarios. As part of the Weston Foundation’s Homegrown Innovation Challenge, this project will be researching strawberry plant physiological growth responses that will (i) investigate light quality and quantity and their effect on strawberry production and shelf life, (ii) test growing media alternatives that can improve production sustainability, and (iii) evaluate technologies that can improve energy efficiency in CEA systems. The desired outcomes for this program include: (i) establishment of a lighting profile that provides improved strawberry quality and shelf stability in an indoor production environment, as well as in the greenhouse in the form of supplemental lighting for improved off-season production; (ii) development of an indoor runner production strategy to free up valuable greenhouse production space; (iii) development/testing of eco- friendly growing media for strawberry production; (iv) elucidation of the engineering criteria needed to design a scale strawberry production facility which includes energy requirements and inputs to HVAC design considerations; and (v) an ongoing assessment of energy use in the systems being proposed to determine the most energy efficient approach moving forward.

Three PhD positions are available at multiple institutions (University of Guelph, McGill, and Dalhousie) that will intersect to achieve targets within a larger project focusing on Food Waste and Carbon transformations in Canada’s Food System. Broadly speaking, these positions will use data gathered from the literature and through direct measurement to quantify greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (National/Regional), model GHG emission scenarios, and evaluate different potential benchmarks for different sectors in Canada’s food value chain, with an emphasis on Food Loss and Waste (FLW), from primary production through to the IC&I sector and consumers. The Brauer lab at Agriculture Canada & University of Ottawa is recruiting a graduate student in the area of plant-microbe interactions to work on host resistance to the fungal pathogen Fusarium graminearum. This pathogen causes significant losses in cereal crops (wheat, corn, barley) and our understanding of the quantitative resistance to the pathogen is limited. The student will work primarily in the Brauer lab (cereal genetics & phenomics) at the Ottawa Research and Development Centre and collaborate closely with a metabolomics research group and a mycology research group within the center to identify plant and fungal genes that contribute to disease resistance or susceptibility. A series of Fusarium strains that are disrupted for genes of interest have been generated based on previous proteomics and transcriptomic work. The impact of these genetic changes on disease progression in resistant and susceptible plant backgrounds will be monitored. High-throughput imaging methods and biochemical methods for monitoring plant resistance phenotypes will be evaluated for their potential in distinguishing plant responses to fungal attack.

A funded graduate student position is available to study peptide signaling controlling plant growth and development in the Lee laboratory at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The selected student will combine molecular genetics, biochemistry, imaging, and proteomics to understand how cells interact to control diverse developmental processes in the plant model organisms, Arabidopsis (for dicots) and Brachypodium (for monocots).
